How to choose courses

There are different formats for the courses you can choose from

Vorlesung: A 'Vorlesung' is a lecture and usually takes place in the lecture hall called "Geo-/Biohörsaal". The lecturer will present her or his topic in a 90-minute session. Preparing some readings and doing some further readings help you to follow the lecture. In some lectures, there will be an exam at the end of the lecture period of the semester. You can register for this course format via Klips 2.0 during the registration periods or by showing up to the first session and informing the lecturer.

Seminars: Seminars take place in the class room sized rooms in the different buildings of the Geographical Institute. You usually have to give a presentation and/or write a term paper to obtain credit points. You can register for seminars during the registration periods of Klips 2.0. You can also send an email with a list of courses you would like to be enrolled into to Lara Lewis Schmalohr (after you are enrolled as a student at the University of Cologne).

Blockseminare and Praktika: Blockseminars and practical courses take place on several days in a row (often partly at the Institute and partly in the research field). These courses often teach geographical (research) methods and how to apply these in the field. The registration is the same as for the seminars (see above).

How to apply for courses

Via the online portal "Klips 2.0" you can find the course descriptions, prerequisites and requirements of the courses offered by the Institute of Geography (here). Below we provide an overview of courses taught in English per semester. If you have further questions regarding the course content and requirements, please contact the respective course coordinator/lecturer directly.

Further information on how to register your course preferences is provided here. There are two application periods per semester in Klips 2.0 in which you can register your course preferences (dates are announced here). The first course application period is usually a few months before the actual semester starts and in many cases before you are enrolled as a guest student. Therefore, guests students often use the second course application period.
